Month: February 2014

It’s the little things.

Okay so at this point we all know how much I love and adore country music. Zac Brown Band has been known to take my life and put it into song form, more than once. Only natural that I would open todays post with a ZBB quote from one of my favorites.

“It’s funny how it’s the little things in life, that mean the most.” – Chicken Fried

Well friends, there are three things that absolutely haven’t left my mind this week. Two of which, very few people know about. That is until I hit the blue publish button to my right and all of blog land and beyond has access to my secrets. No pressure or anything.

The above is one of the only ones I could find to accurately depict where I am going with this. I’m going to have throw things back a few years to properly explain where I’m coming from. Before I dive into an explanation, do you see the rays or beams of light poking out from behind the clouds? Those are the best little reminders of love ever.

The summer before I went into eighth grade my Papa was diagnosed with cancer. What started as lung cancer, presumably from smoking cigarettes back in the day when it was cool (insert sick face-mask emoji here,) spread to his bones and was throughout his body before we were even aware it existed. The reason for catching it? A pain in his shoulder we all chalked up as a result of the 100 daily pushups he had still been doing. That’s right folks- 100 pushups everyday since World War II. God love that man. It was almost two months to the day after diagnosis that we lost one of the most influential men in my life. In those two months we hugged a little tighter, said “I love you” a little more and appreciated even the most mundane moments. For me to tell you my Papa was an extraordinary man would be an understatement.

At some point in those two months my cousin, Katherine, mentioned she loved the way the sun shone through the clouds. To this, my Papa responded “I’ll shine down for you. That’s how you will all know I’m still here.” Now, nothing in the world makes me feel as good as seeing a beam of light shine through the clouds. Not even a brand new Louis Vuitton bag. Although, if someone were to offer me one I wouldn’t say no.

Playing off the sun beams; my second little thing is a spot I go to look for them. During the summer primarily, there is a small park in my hometown where I could sit for hours just talking to myself. I’m not sure why but I seem to do my best thinking there. The best part? There’s always rays of sun to talk to! None of my friends know when I’m there or even that I go to make me feel better. It’s all mine. Muahaha, just kidding. It only gets kind of awkward when people come to walk their dogs and I’m the weird girl sitting alone. I mean, whatever. Haven’t ya’ll ever seen a girl sitting in the sun before?

The third and final small thing of the week is having my best friend home for spring break. Let’s meet her.

IMG_2891 163577_10151582031359558_1591255273_n

That’s my bestie, Jen. She goes to school all the way in Florida and more often than not it makes me miserable. Jen makes me feel better when I’m irrationally upset about a coffee Dunkin Donuts screwed up. She makes me laugh when she sends me love letters via text at 2am, typically after a few snapchats of her inhaling wine. Oh! She also loves wine as much as me. She tells me it’s totally fine to not wear a bra to class and even better to go tanning regularly. I mean it IS a fact that everyone looks better tan. No, but on a serious note, I can and do tell her everything about me and she still loves me. That is really impressive, my friends.

The point of this little blog post today is to share that in my experience, the things that warm your heart the most are the things that are both free and irreplaceable. The little things.

Social Networks.

As a twenty year old girl- I take full advantage of social networking sights. I have Twitter, Facebook and Instagram apps on my phone in which I check regularly. Fine. Significantly more than I should. Happy? I have such a love- hate relationship with these little shits. I use them to stay connected with my friends and family across the country, maybe world. I can upload pictures and status’ about what I have been up to as well as keep track of what my friends have been getting themselves into.Good or bad- one never knows what to expect with them.

So where does the “hate” part come in? I dislike the way social networking is such a huge part of life. Society as a whole places so much importance in the internet that we don’t pay much attention to what is around us. Almost like unless it is posted somewhere- it isn’t real. The phrase “Is it facebook official?” Are you serious. C’mon.

#TBT; such a cool thought but overdone and obnoxious at the point. If you say “Tee-Bee-Tee” in real life you need to be grounded. I’m talking no electronics for a week. You’re sentenced to actually playing outside in fresh air and not tweeting about. You’ve been served.

I am as guilty as the next girl for being online way too frequently but there is a real world that is rather pretty and should be noticed. Last night, as I was backing out of my parking spot at Target, I noticed a woman walking toward my car scrolling through her phone. She clearly didn’t see me so I applied the breaks trying to avoid hitting the bitch. She walked right into the back of my car. HELLLLOO! Pay attention.

I think back to how much fun I had playing games and day dreaming with my friends when I was younger. It makes me sad that such young kids have so many social networks at their fingertips. If you aren’t in high school you don’t need a twitter OR Facebook. Sorry not sorry. Bullying is so easy now it makes mt stomach do flips and my heart feel like a brick.

I guess the moral of this rant is to appreciate the beauty in life and have a normal conversation with people. I try not to use my phone at all when I am out but it doesn’t always work. Anyways.. I challenge you to cut back on your social network use and get away from life via instagram filters. Think about it- the sun and a fresh covering of snow are instagram filters from mother nature herself.

Do you ever have those days er, weeks where you want nothing more than to shut your brain off? Hi! That’s me right now. It isn’t all negative though. Thus, my post today was born. A collection of all the crazy thought swirling around in this noggin of mine plus some exciting news because well, I just don’t like surprises.

  • Surprise! I’m switching to Blogger! I am really nervous and reading so many mixed reviews on which platform is better. Any help, advice or support will be greatly appreciated while I’m trying to build up my new blog!
  • I’m going to Luke Bryan with my family in August!! Hold on- gets better. Not only will Lukey be there but I will also see Lee Brice, Dierks Bentley AND Cole Swindell. Wait what? I know. Magic. in. one. concert.
  • Speaking of which all country fans listen to “I Don’t Dance” by Lee Brice. I am listening to it on repeat.
  • Does anyone here read Two Thirds Hazel? Erin posted today about being the parent to kids that aren’t yours and it made me one happy camper. I’m a nanny to two little girls who have completely stolen my heart. I went an entire week without seeing them and it was harder than you would think! We definitely have our days, but I wouldn’t trade my job for the world. In regards to Erin’s post I sometimes feel as though the other parents are mean to me or look down on me. For example, when I pick Maddie up at preschool there is a mom that ALWAYS slams the door in my face. Bitch. She will also make comments about how nannies just can’t teach kids properly. In a days time I do everything they do so what gives them the right? I’m rambling. Just go read her post.
  • I told you all via twitter I was going to post about Wen hair care at some point this week. I’m not. Still trying to figure it out which I will explain when I finally get around to posting. Hopefully next week!
  • This seasons Bachelor sucks. Andi- That argument was confusing and forced I think. She just wants Bachelorette. Nikki- Really cute and I think would make an awesome girlfriend but I’m not convinced she is 100% ready to be a step mom. Claire- Well, she has crazy eyes. Something is just not right there. You know what JP? I think Renee was your best bet. Dumbass. Thoughts?
  •  I desperately need a new moisturizer. Please help!

This was a disaster of a post but what are you going to do? Enjoy Wednesday and follow me on twitter for updates on my new blog! @pearls_sass!

Do what you love, love what you do.

Liebster Award.

Feeling extra thankful today for my new found friends in blog land. I have met many supportive ladies and am loving how things are going for me right now. There will be some exciting changes around here in just a couple weeks. I can’t wait to share with everyone! Anyways, I was recently nominated for a Liebster Award. The goal of a Liebster Award is to generate attention toward up and coming bloggers. Typically those nominated have 200 or less followers. Upon getting nominated there are a few rules, but as you know I enjoy breaking rules.

Screen Shot 2014-02-24 at 11.14.48 AM

The rules are as follows-

  1. Acknowledge the nominating blogger
  2. Answer 11 questions the nominating blogger has created for you
  3. Provide 11 random facts about yourself
  4. List some bloggers with fewer than 200 followers that you really feel deserve a little blogging love!
  5. Let all of the bloggers know you have nominated them.  You cannot nominate the blogger that nominated you!
  6. Post 11 questions for the bloggers you have nominated to answer.

Here’s the thing friends. I have a few too many bloggers to nominate. Mine are all a part of the Her Campus Blogger Network. I am encouraging ordering you all to visit the network and check out some of bloggers on the list. The blogs are categorized by their primary posts. Looking for a fun DIY project? Click on a blog in the DIY section and get in touch with your creative side. All of the bloggers are so amazing and I just love reading their stuff. I hope you do, too! While you’re there you may as well check out the rest of the website. I absolutely love Her Campus and what they stand for. Check them out, friends.

Moving on- I would like to send a big old Thank you over to Heather at Coconut & Cotton for nominating me. Check her out and tell her I sent ya. Or not… just go. Heather has provided some questions for me to answer so let’s get to answering.

1. Why did you start your blog?

I started my blog because I was hoping to someday join the Her Campus Blogger Network. I also was hopeful there would be a day I could look back at these pages and remember all of the amazing things in my life. Whether they are good or bad, I want to remember everything.

2. What’s your favorite lip product?

My favorite lip product is a simple chapstick made by Avon. It is called Intense Moisture Lip Therapy and it is really the only product I use regularly.

3. Do you have curly, wavy, or straight hair?

My hair is stick straight. So lame, right? During the summer months when I am sun kissed and salty my hair has a pretty nice curl wave to it. Other than that I am as boring as they come, folks.

4. What’s your favorite movie?

If I was trying to look like an adult I would tell you my favorite movie of all time is Remember The Titans. If we are being completely honest, which we are, I would tell you my favorite movie is Despicable Me.

5. Who inspires you the most?

This question is always so difficult for me because I am constantly drawing inspiration from everyone and everything I can get my hands on. I think everyone we meet is for a reason and we come across certain situations for a reason as well. However, since I don’t want to completely shy away from the question I will say my cousin. My cousin Katherine is one of my best friends and has the most amazing heart of anyone I have ever met.

6. When do you blog? Day? Night? On your lunch break?

I typically blog whenever I have a free moment. Right now it is while I am nannying and my little chick is watching Strawberry Shortcake. Usually it is in the morning. Or I will write a post at night and schedule it for the next morning.

7. If you could only wear one of the following which would you choose? Rings, bracelets, or necklaces.

Rings. No question. Ring power forever.

8. What’s your favorite foundation/powder?

MAC face and body foundation. Heaven in a damn bottle my friends. Heaven.

9. Describe your perfect vacation.

My perfect vacation would come with a beach and some cocktails. There would also be ample time for exploring the culture and making friends with the locals.

10. If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be?

Anywhere in the world!? It is a really big world out there. Yikes. Santorini, Greece. Who’s taking me?

Screen Shot 2014-02-25 at 4.40.20 PM

11. What’s your middle name?

Marie. C’mon parents, you couldn’t get a little creative?

As for the random facts. How about 20 instead of 11? Over achiever, I know. Find those gems here.

A big ol’ Thank you to all my new friends!

This is the quickest blog post ever. While it is super vague in the grand scheme of things hopefully it will help out my tweety friends just a little bit! Hockey consists of three periods each 20 minutes in length. Here in the US we are headed into quite the nail biter with one period left in our game against Canada. If one team is up over another at the end of those three periods, game over. If not we go into overtime. Overtime is considered a sudden death extra period meaning the first team to score is the winner. At the end of OT if the score is still even we will head into a shoot out. In a shoot out players take turns shooting one on one with the goalie. Usually, a shoot out is a 3 person shoot out. Whichever team scored the most after those three shots wins.

Terms you will hear frequently-

Faceoff-  Reff drops the puck in between two players who fight to snatch it and pass it off to a teammate.

Penalty- Same as any other sport penalties can be earned for a variety of different reasons. However, there are three different penalties a player can be given. A minor, major or misconduct. The most common penalty is a minor in which the player is sent to the penalty box for for two minutes giving the other team a power play.

Power Play- A one man advantage on the ice due to a penalty by a player on the other team. If the team with the PP scores within the two minute mark, Power Play is over and the offending player can return to the ice.

Icing- There are variations on icing however it is basically when a player shoots the puck across the center red line and the opposing teams goal line without it being touched.

I saw a lot of tweets asking about fighting. Fighting is not encouraged however it happens and is occasionally allowed. In the political sense most teams have ‘enforcers’ they are on the pay roll to fight when necessary. When there is a player playing chippy or throwing dirty hits the enforcer takes over. You will often hear “dropping the gloves” as players literally drop their gloves while squaring up for a fight.

Hitting is totally allowed and a HUGE part of the game. To keep everyone safe there are many rules that go along with hitting i.e.- no hitting from behind.

Post questions if you may have them! We can revisit this with more detail after the olympics. GO USA!!!!

Venus Trapped in Mars

I’m the kinda girl..

I have read multiple blogs recently that are using the “I’m the kinda girl who” tag. Therefore I have decided to take the plunge and turn this Friday into an informercial about me. Yikes!

Screen Shot 2014-02-20 at 10.43.40 PM

— preaches about girls feeling their best and being confident in themselves, but overanalyzes every aspect of myself.

— fills up my wine glass to the max with every pour. The only negative is when I head to dinner. The glasses of wine I am served at restaurants are disappointing as hell.

— Can’t have anyone touching my things. Not sure what it is, just don’t touch my stuff. The claws will come out.

–Loves material items but knows money does’t buy happiness. As you may have noticed in a recent post, I love expensive things. However, I love my family and the necessities I take for granted every day even more.

— Is the best flip cup player in the world. If there was a flip cup olympics, this little lady would take home gold.

–Goes to bed at night looking forward to breakfast in the morning.

— Will people watch and create a story for everyone I come across. Occasionally, I stumble across someone who really interests me. In those situations I wonder what their real story is for a couple of days. Creepy? Maybe.

–Finds standing in the rain (during the summer only) one of the most relaxing things I can do. I always feel as though the rain is washing all of the negatives away.

–Cringes like a child at romantic or uncomfortable scenes in movies.

— Can enjoy myself in a sports bar with a pitcher of beer but would jump at any black tie event I could get my hands on.

— Has two favorite outfits. Sundresses and sweatpants.

— Pretends not to see people I know in public in an attempt avoid awkward conversation. On the other hand I will always smile at strangers and say “hello” in hopes of brightening their day just a little bit.

–Tries to change my makeup just a tiny bit everyday.

— Loves spending time with friends but loves time alone just a little bit more. Netflix and wine are a girls best friend.

— Want’s nothing more than to have a diamond ring and to plan a wedding. The only issue is I don’t actually want to be married after. At least for right now anyway.

— Plans out every conversation in my head before it happens and overthinks every mundane situation I can.

— Is the least romantic in the world but definitely believes in love.

— Really really really dislikes wearing pants.

— Expects everyone to always drive over the speed limit and be in as much of a rush as I am. Always.

— Is thankful. For everything I have and everyone I love.

Throwin’ it back- Twitter style.

In the  spirit of throwback Thursday, I figured going through my old tweets would be hilarious.. or frightening. Last night I watched an 18 year old Gracie Gold compete in the olympics and capture America’s heart. I couldn’t help but think about what a hot mess I was at 18. So here are a couple tweets depicting just how terrible it was. Good lord.

Let’s set a few ground rules shall we?

1. No making fun of me! I do it well enough on my own. Some of my tweets are well, dramatic.

2. Tweeting sad love songs is no longer okay after 19, under any circumstances. Don’t do it.

Welcome into the inner public thoughts of my high school life. Yikes.

Disclaimer: You are about to embark on an embarrassing trip down memory lane.

ONE// This would be when I had my cartilage pierced. I knew my Dad would be furious but I did it anyway. He was pretty angry.

TWO// 18 year old Shannon(s)why the HELL did you think this was okay? It’s not. “tryna get shitted” well aren’t you just the shit. This, my friends, is why there is a drinking age. Good god.

THREE// Bad high school breakup, duh. You keep tweeting sad love songs Shan, no one knows what they’re about….

FOUR// My entire dance team, otherwise known as the best part of my high school career, came down with some strange stomach bug that we kept passing between one another. Mine was more of a virus that wouldn’t go away and when all was said and done I had lost about 18 pounds. Strange huh?  The kids in school were asking my friends if I had an eating disorder.
